
The expression is perfect and the focus landed on the eyelashes. Modern sharpening can rescue more than the old tools ever could, which is exactly why photographers now lose ten minutes on frames that deserved ten seconds. Here is how to tell in one look whether the detail is there to recover, and what to do when it is not.
Sharpening tools cannot tell you what went wrong, and the answer decides everything. A frame that missed focus by an inch on a still subject and a frame smeared by a turning head look similar in a thumbnail grid and behave completely differently when you try to fix them.
Missed focus means the lens locked on the wrong plane. The detail exists somewhere in the picture, just not where you wanted it. Subject motion means the person moved while the shutter was open, so the features themselves are smeared in one direction. Camera shake smears everything, uniformly, in the same direction. And a file can look soft without ever being soft, because heavy noise reduction wiped the texture out of the skin after the fact.

That last row matters more than photographers expect, because a sharpness score cannot separate low contrast from blur. The deliberate dragged shutter and the misty backlit portrait score badly for the same reason your genuine misses do. Every rescue decision comes down to one question. Did the sensor record the structure you want back, at low contrast, or did it never record it at all? Sharpening raises contrast at edges that exist. It cannot resurrect information that was never captured, and when you push it into that territory, it starts inventing plausible detail instead.
So zoom to 100 percent on the nearest eye and look for three things.
Then check whether the smear has a direction. Real focus miss is soft in every direction at once. Motion and shake are soft along one axis and often still crisp across it, and that asymmetry is your reliable tell that no amount of processing is going to help, because the tool has to guess what the face was doing while it moved.
Two frames, two answers, and you are done in the time it takes to read this paragraph. That speed is the whole point. The expensive habit is not rescuing files, it is deliberating about rescuing files, which is the loop we wrote about in rejecting photos without second guessing every frame.
There is no absolute standard for sharp enough. The same file can be perfectly good as a 1,500 pixel image in a gallery, adequate in a small album spread, and embarrassing at forty inches on a wall. Judging at 100 percent and then deciding is backwards. Judge at the size it will be seen.
Three tiers are enough for most studios.
The album is where this bites, because album images get printed larger and looked at longer than gallery images ever do, and the standard should rise accordingly. We go through that separate pass in picking for an album versus picking for a gallery. If a tier two frame is genuinely the only record of a moment, tell the couple before it gets printed rather than after.
The rescue decision should never happen to a single photo in isolation. Almost every soft frame at a wedding has neighbors, because you were shooting a sequence. Before you spend anything on repair, look at what else you have from the same ten seconds.
Most of the time the question answers itself. If the frame beside it is materially sharper and nearly as good on expression, that one wins and the decision took three seconds. The rescue is only worth considering when the soft frame holds something the others do not: the actual laugh, the eye contact, the hand that reached out. A slightly soft photo with the real moment in it can absolutely be the best picture from a sequence, which is the argument in why your best photo is not the sharpest one.
What you should not do is compare a sharpened version against the alternatives. Compare the untouched soft frame against the alternatives, decide which moment you want, and only then find out whether the winner can be improved. Judging repaired against unrepaired quietly biases you toward the file you have already spent time on. Everything here assumes the original survives untouched. Work on a virtual copy or a duplicate layer, name the version so you can tell it apart six months from now, and keep the raw. The originals are what make the whole decision reversible.
Then work in this order.
The stopping rule is simple. If you are now retouching to hide what the sharpening did, blurring skin, taming halos, rebuilding an eyelash, you are losing. Put it back and take the tier two version, or take the other frame.
Pushed too far, these tools leave a signature, and clients notice it without being able to name it. The frame looks somehow wrong beside the rest of the gallery, and that inconsistency is the real cost.
That last one is the most reliable test I know. Depth of field is physics. If the eyes are suddenly crisp while the ear at the same plane is not, something added detail that the lens never delivered, and a viewer will feel it even at gallery size.
Keep a rough count of how many frames you try to save per job. If it is one or two, that is normal. If it is thirty, the fix is not a better sharpening tool. Something upstream is wrong: autofocus mode or subject detection settings, a shutter speed that suits a still portrait but not a moving one, a lens that needs calibrating, or a habit of shooting wide open when the composition needed two people on the same plane.
The cheap version of this check is on the day. After a lighting change or a lens swap, pull up one frame at 100 percent and look at the eye. Ten seconds during cocktail hour catches a back button focus problem that would otherwise cost you the whole ceremony. Shooting a couple of extra frames of the moments that cannot be repeated helps too.
A rising rescue count also quietly distorts your delivery numbers, since borderline frames are the ones most likely to move in and out of a gallery from job to job. If you track that at all, what keep rate really measures explains what actually moves the figure.
Be clear about the division of labor. A picking tool works on the whole shoot and helps you find the candidates, including the sharper alternative sitting two frames away that you would otherwise never open. Sharpening works on one chosen file. Neither one makes the judgment call in the middle, which is yours.
Worth knowing what the tools now measure. Adobe ships Assisted Culling in Lightroom Classic and cloud Lightroom, labeled early access, scoring Subject Focus, Eye Focus and Eyes Open, and Adobe says it is optimized for portraits and headshots. Rarely in any way you would deliver. Motion smears the features themselves in one direction, so the detail was never recorded and the software has to invent what the face was doing. Mild blur on a slow moving subject sometimes improves enough for a small image. If the result shows crisp edges on a face that still looks like it is moving, it is invented and viewers will feel it.
Zoom to 100 percent on the nearest eye and look for separate eyelashes, a defined catchlight and any hint of the iris ring. Soft but present means the detail is there and sharpening has something to work with. A flat gray disc, or a smear that runs in one direction, means it is not there and no processing will bring it back.
Sometimes, and it should be a deliberate exception rather than a standard. A frame that holds an irreplaceable moment can earn its place at gallery size even if it would fail as a print. What it should not do is drift into the album design unnoticed, since album images are printed larger and looked at far longer than gallery images.
It depends on your agreement and the kind of work. For ordinary finishing, most photographers describe it as part of their editing rather than announcing each tool. What you should avoid is calling a file untouched when it has been substantially processed, and for documentary or commercial work it is worth agreeing editing standards before the shoot rather than after.
It can, and it is the most common cause of softness that had nothing to do with focus. Aggressive noise reduction removes fine texture along with grain, leaving smooth skin and mushy hair. Sharpening afterward tries to put edges back onto a surface that no longer has any, which produces the waxy and crunchy look. Re-edit from the raw with a lighter hand instead.
It depends entirely on the size and the viewing distance rather than on any single number. A file that is fine at 1,500 pixels on screen may fall apart at sixteen by twenty on a wall, where people stand close and look for a long time. When a print is planned, judge the file at the delivery dimensions, and make a small test print if the image matters.
