Travel and landscape culling: almost the same is not the same

A landscape folder can make you doubt your own eyes. Fifty files show the same ridge, and yet one has the cloud opening over the summit, one has the only clean foreground, and one has a walker in it who gives the whole scene scale. Here is how to tell a real variation from a nervous backup, without throwing away the frame you flew nine hours for.

01 · THE DOUBT

Why a landscape folder is harder than it looks

Most advice about picking photos assumes you are choosing between alternatives. Nine frames of a groom laughing are nine attempts at one moment, and eight of them lose. That model is why duplicate cleanup works: the frames are substitutes, so you keep the best one and the rest are genuinely redundant.

Landscape breaks the model. You did not shoot the same scene fifty times because you were unsure. You shot it because the scene kept changing while you stood there. The light moved across the valley, the tide went out, a squall arrived, a walker gave the ridge a sense of scale. At thumbnail size that looks like one photograph repeated. At full size it is several pictures that happen to share a composition.

Then there is the part that makes people freeze. You cannot go back. A wedding can be reshot in the sense that another wedding happens next Saturday. A specific fog on a specific morning at a fjord you reached by boat is finished. So the honest fear is not that you will keep too much, it is that the one frame you cannot recreate will be the one you set aside at eleven at night with a laptop screen and no coffee.

The answer to that fear is not keeping everything. It is a method with a sharper question at the front of it than is this the same view.

02 · SEPARATE FIRST

Separate scenes before you compare anything

The most common mistake in a travel folder is comparing frames that were never alternatives. A valley at sunrise and the same valley in noon haze are two different photographs, and putting them in one grid guarantees you judge them against each other for no reason.

So split by place and by light window, not by day. A folder called Iceland Day 4 tells you nothing you need. Reynisfjara_sunrise, Reynisfjara_storm and Hofn_lagoon_dusk tell you exactly which frames belong in a grid together. If a location got three visits, that is three groups, even though the coordinates are identical.

Add keywords while the memory is warm: country, trail, season, weather, whether you needed a permit, and anyone who has to be credited. GPS tells you where you stood. It does not tell you the viewpoint took a two hour climb, or that a drone restriction is why the frame looks the way it does, and that is the context that decides things a year from now.

If the trip is long enough that the folders will pile up before you get home, the field routine is worth borrowing from wildlife: cheap perishable work in the evening, careful work on a real screen later. 03 · ONE PHOTOGRAPH

Brackets, stacks and panoramas are one photograph, not twelve candidates

A five frame bracket, a focus stack through foreground flowers and a twelve frame panorama are ingredients. No individual file in them is a portfolio candidate, and rating them as though they were is how people end up with a five star folder full of half exposed skies.

Treat each set as one unit. Stack it in Lightroom, or put the sequence in its own collection so capture order survives. Give the set a marker you can search for later: PANO, HDR, FOCUS, TIMELAPSE. This is the single most useful habit in a landscape catalog, because the frame that looks obviously disposable at thumbnail size is frequently the missing left edge of a panorama.

04 · THE REAL QUESTION

The question is not whether it is the same view

Once the scenes are separated and the technical sets are grouped, you are finally looking at frames that really are of the same thing. Now ask the question that does the work: did the light, the weather, the human scale or the composition change enough to make a different statement? It has a yes and a no, and both are useful.

Work in small groups, three or four frames at a time, in a fixed order: the shape of the light first, then the foreground, then the horizon, then clarity. The order matters more than the criteria, because it stops you re-arguing the same comparison from a new angle every time you come back.

Travel scenes follow the same rule. A market square at first light, at peak trade, and after rain is three photographs. Seven frames taken while you turned slowly at one cafe table is one photograph you shot seven times.

05 · FOREGROUND FIRST

Judge the foreground before the sky

A dramatic sky is the most persuasive thing on a screen and the least reliable reason to choose a frame. It is also the part two frames usually share, so it cannot be what separates them.

Look at the first third of the frame before you look up. Does something lead the eye in: a rock, a path, a tide line, a patch of flowers? Or is there a dark corner adding weight and nothing else? When two files share a sky, the one with the cleaner route from front to subject wins quickly.

Then check edge quality at full resolution, in the places where landscape work actually fails: foliage moving in wind, water at the shutter speed you chose, the contour where a ridge meets sky. A small focus error usually shows in the nearest texture first, and it shows in a print long before you notice it on a laptop.

Softness is not automatically fatal. Motion in grass or water can be what you intended, and a frame that is soft where nobody looks can still be the strongest picture in the group. The line between a flaw and an intention is drawn by what the picture is for, which we worked through in when a soft photo is still worth keeping. If the plan is a large print, make a test print before you commit. Deep shadows and saturated greens behave differently on paper.

One more pass, after the technical comparison and never before it. Look at the survivors as thumbnails and notice which ones still pull at you for no reason you can name. That reaction is usually catching a scale relationship or a restraint in color you cannot articulate yet. Give it weight, then confirm the file can carry the output you have in mind.

06 · TWO EDITS

The portfolio edit and the archive edit are different jobs

Most landscape culling anxiety comes from making one decision serve two purposes. A portfolio needs to be narrow, because a page with four versions of one ridge is weaker than a page with one. An archive needs to be broad, because an editor or a guidebook will eventually ask for the vertical crop, the wider view, or the version without the person in it.

So make both, and mark them differently. One or two files per location go into the portfolio pool. Distinct variations of the scene go to the archive, along with every technical set. Nothing has to be erased for the portfolio to stay tight, which is the whole point: a narrow edit is a display decision, not a storage decision. The general argument, including what keeping really costs, is in should you keep rejected RAW files.

There is a specifically travel reason to keep a strong alternate rather than only the hero. Permissions and context change what an image can be used for. A recognizable person, a restricted cultural site, private property, a viewpoint that only exists because a drone was allowed that day: any of those can limit licensing or require a caption you did not plan on. Keep release information and location notes attached to the selected file, and keep the clean, slightly less dramatic companion frame, because it may be the one you can actually sell.

07 · THE TRIP

Review the trip by day, not only by location

When the location groups are done, do one pass across the whole trip in order. You are not judging pictures now. You are looking for gaps.

The usual gap is a trip edit that is all summits and no travel. Grand vistas, beautifully done, and no sense of how anyone moved through the place: no roads, no weather turning, no meals, no faces. That is scenery rather than travel photography, and the missing frames are usually in the folder already, marked two stars because they did not impress on their own.

This is not an argument for padding the edit with weak images. It is an argument that a quiet frame of wet boots at a trailhead makes the mountain photograph next to it more specific, and gets selected for what it adds to the sequence rather than for how it performs alone.

Do this pass before you start processing anything. Photographers lose whole days trying treatments on ten near identical files, and then discover the sequence needed a different frame entirely. Confirm the selects, keep one or two alternates alive, and only then start editing.

08 · WHAT SOFTWARE DOES

What software can decide here, and what it cannot

Selection software is good at exactly the mechanical part of this job. It groups near identical frames so you see them together instead of scattered across a timeline, finds the sharpest file in a run, and flags obvious misfires. On a trip folder the grouping alone is worth it. How it works, and where it gets confused, is in how duplicate detection works.

The limits are worth knowing before you trust a ranking. Adobe now ships Assisted Culling in Lightroom Classic and cloud Lightroom, labeled early access, scoring subject focus, eye focus and eyes open while rejecting exposure problems and misfires. Adobe states it is optimized for portraits and headshots, which fairly describes what those criteria measure. A ridge line has no eyes. More generally, no model knows the cloud opened for ninety seconds, that you waited two mornings for it, or that the frame with the soft corner is the only one where the boat sits right. Those categories are collected in what AI culling misses, and landscape work lives in all of them at once.

FAQ

How many landscape photos should I keep from one viewpoint?

Keep the frames that represent a real change in light, weather, framing or technical purpose. For a static scene that is often one strong file plus any panorama or bracket set. For a fast sunrise it can be several, because the scene genuinely became different pictures while you stood there. Count changes, not files.

Should I delete travel RAW files after making my selects?

Not straight away. Keep the selects, the alternates and every technical sequence on a backed up archive, then revisit later once you know nothing is needed. The risk with erasing early is not the obvious failures, it is quietly breaking a panorama, focus stack or bracket by removing one frame that looked disposable on its own.

Is AI culling useful for landscape photography?

Yes for the mechanical part. It clusters near identical frames and finds the sharpest file in a run, which saves real time on a big trip folder. It cannot judge weather, story or the reason you kept waiting. Current tools also score criteria aimed at people and faces, so treat their ranking as a starting grid rather than an answer.

How do I stop rating panorama and bracket frames individually?

Group them the moment they land. Stack the sequence or put it in its own collection, and tag it PANO, HDR or FOCUS so it is searchable later. Then rate the group, never the members. This also protects you from the common error of keeping the best looking single frame and losing the rest of the set.

Should I cull while I am still travelling?

Do the perishable part on the trip and the careful part at home. In the evening, group by location and light, tag the technical sets, and mark anything you remember as special while you still remember why. Leave close comparisons for a real screen. Field selection is about capturing context, not about finishing.
