
Adding a second shooter does not double your culling. It changes the job. You come home with two exposure styles, two white balances, two clocks that disagree, and two versions of every moment that mattered. Your first task is to make the two sets behave like one set. Only then do you start picking. Here is the order that works.
The complaint is always the same. You added a second shooter, the day went beautifully, and then the folder felt three times worse than usual. So you blame volume.
Volume is not what happened. You were handed two shoots and asked to make one gallery, and nobody told you that is a separate task with its own steps. Two bodies means two exposure habits, two white balance decisions, two clocks that disagree by an unknown amount, and two versions of every moment that mattered. Until those sets behave like one set, every decision you make is made with half the information.
So the order matters more than the effort. Merge first, then pick. Photographers who pick first and merge afterward deliver two of everything, because they judged each folder against itself instead of judging the wedding. Most of what people blame on culling a two shooter wedding is a merge problem wearing a culling costume.
This is the highest value habit in this article and it takes ninety seconds. Every camera on the job needs the same time, to the second, before anyone shoots.
Do it at the morning meeting, out loud, with both photographers watching. Set the same time zone on every body, including the backups in the bag, and check the date too, because a camera that lost its battery may have reset to a date years ago. Some manufacturers let you push the time from their phone app, which is the most reliable method.
Even after syncing, do this: pull up the clock on your phone and photograph the screen with every body on the job. One frame each, ten seconds. That frame is a permanent record of what each camera believed the time was, and it rescues you when a body turns out to have been forty three minutes off all day.
Lightroom has Metadata, then Edit Capture Time, with an option to shift by a set number of hours. Photo Mechanic and Adobe Bridge have equivalents. The method is the same: find one frame from each camera of the same event, work out the offset, select every frame from the offending camera, and shift the whole set. Do it at ingest, before you sort or group anything.
Skip it and the ceremony arrives scattered across your timeline in two clumps an hour apart, so you can never see one moment at a time. Anything that groups similar frames, your own eye included, breaks, because it uses capture time as the spine and yours is lying. A wrong timestamp is not a small metadata problem. It decides whether the rest of this works.
Ingest decides whether the merge is clean or a mess you keep re-fixing.
The prefix does real work. It survives copying, importing and exporting in a way a folder location does not, so six months later you can answer "who shot this" from the filename. If your file structure is held together with hope, RAW file management is worth an hour first.
Here is the uncomfortable part. Eleven near identical frames of the first kiss, six yours and five theirs, is not a culling problem. It is a briefing problem you created at nine that morning.
Two photographers in nearly the same place produce redundancy, not coverage. Pointed at complementary things, they produce a gallery you could not have shot alone. The difference is a two minute conversation.
The simplest assignment that works: the lead owns the primary line, the second owns the reaction. If the lead shoots the action, the second shoots the faces watching it. Then add one axis of separation to every moment, distance or position. One wide, one tight. One from the front, one from behind.

Say it out loud in the morning and again before the ceremony, because timelines move and a plan nobody restated is a plan nobody follows. One exception: on the two or three moments the couple explicitly paid for, both of you shoot it, because insurance is worth the duplicates. With both sets in one folder in true time order, the selection is simpler than a single shooter wedding, not harder. It just has to run in this order.
The failure mode is selecting each set separately and combining the results. It feels organized and it is the reliable way to deliver two of everything: two first kisses from four feet apart, two cake cuttings, two near identical speeches. The client does not experience your gallery as two photographers' work. They experience it as their wedding, once.
For scale, a wedding typically produces 2,000 to 4,000 RAW frames and a gallery of 400 to 800 images. A second shooter raises the frame count a lot and the delivered count only a little, because you added angles, not extra wedding.
The other thing that makes a merged folder feel wrong is that the cameras do not look alike. One shooter runs warm and slightly bright, the other cooler and protective of highlights. Scrolling feels like a gallery changing its mind.
Pick on content first anyway. Do not let the frame closer to your look beat the frame with the better moment in it. Choose the winner, then treat consistency as its own editing step: use your frames as the reference look, get the second shooter's picks onto the same white balance and brightness with a matching profile, then edit. Be realistic about what that rescues.

Which is the argument for agreeing on flash use in the morning. White balance and exposure are cheap to fix later. Lighting and focal length are not.
Second shooters want to know how they did, and most leads never tell them, which is how someone repeats a mistake for three seasons.
Start by fixing the maths in both heads. On the ranges above, roughly one frame in five makes the gallery, and that is the lead's own hit rate. Nobody delivers most of what they shoot. So "I used four of yours from the ceremony" is not a verdict on their ability. Say that early and it stops being loaded.
Useful feedback is specific and about the next wedding. "Your cocktail hour candids carried that section, keep doing that" beats a compliment. "You were about a stop under all day indoors, bring the flash up" is fixable. "Some of it was a bit soft" is not. If a moment was thin, name the moment.
Put it in writing before the day, not after they ask. Three things cause arguments:

Cross camera duplicate grouping only works if the timestamps are right. Grouping tools use capture time as the spine and visual similarity as the check. If one camera is forty minutes out, no tool will put your first kiss frame next to theirs: the metadata says those photographs happened at different points in the evening. What no software knows is your coverage plan, or that the couple asked for one specific frame. Intent lives in your head, which is why picking still ends with a person.

Cover usage rights, whether the second shooter may post the images and when, credit, and the delivery deadline for cards or files.
