Aftershoot Select review (2026): who it's genuinely for

Aftershoot is the tool most photographers try first when they decide culling has stopped being sustainable, and there is a good reason for that. It is mature, it is priced sensibly, and it does not send your clients' photos anywhere. It also has three limits that matter, and none of them are secret. This review is about matching the tool to the photographer, not scoring it out of ten.

The short version

Aftershoot Select is a desktop application that takes a folder of images, analyses every frame on your own machine, and hands back a proposed selection with the failures grouped and flagged. It looks for the mechanical problems, closed eyes, missed focus, blur, duplicate frames from a burst, and it clusters similar shots so you can see the six versions of a moment together instead of scattered through a timeline.

You then go through what it proposed. It is not a black box that produces a gallery. It is a very fast assistant that does the tedious sorting and then asks you to sign off.

Pricing, plainly

Two things stand out. First, unlimited images at every tier. Your busy August does not cost more than a quiet February, which is the opposite of how per-photo pricing works and much easier to plan around. Second, the annual discount is real: $10 versus $15 is a third off, so if you know you will use it, annual is the sane choice.

For scale, The Knot's 2025 study puts the average US wedding photographer at $3,000 per wedding, with quartiles at $1,500, $2,800 and $4,700. On the annual plan the whole year of Select costs $120, which is under 5 percent of a single average booking. What it genuinely does well

Unlimited volume, predictable bill

A wedding is 2,000 to 4,000 RAW frames. Twenty five weddings a season is comfortably 75,000 frames. Under a per-photo model that is a number you have to think about. Under Aftershoot's it is not a number at all. For anyone shooting volume, this is the single biggest practical advantage.

Local processing

Nothing leaves your machine. That is worth something on principle, and it is worth a lot in practice if you live somewhere with an ordinary upload speed, or if you shoot work where sending images to a third party is a contractual problem. It also means your throughput scales with your computer rather than with someone else's queue.

It is mature

This is underrated. Aftershoot has been through enough versions that the boring things work: it handles the RAW formats you actually shoot, it survives odd folder structures, it does not fall over on a 4,000 frame job. Newer tools frequently do not, and you find out at the worst moment.

You can audit it for free

The 30 day trial does not ask for a card. That is long enough to run it over two or three real shoots you have already culled by hand and compare its decisions against yours. Do exactly that, and pay attention to the disagreements rather than the agreements.

Three real constraints

Desktop only

Aftershoot runs on your computer, and only on your computer. The work still has to happen at the desk, after you get home, after the previews build. If your bottleneck is not analysis speed but the fact that you cannot start until 10 PM on a Sunday, Aftershoot does not touch that problem. Narrative Select and FilterPixel share this constraint; it is a property of the category, not a flaw in one product.

You audit rather than decide

Be clear about what changes. Before, you looked at 3,000 frames and made 3,000 decisions. After, you look at a proposed selection and check it, which is faster but is still a review job, and reviewing someone else's judgement has its own fatigue. Photographers who expect to press a button and receive a gallery are disappointed, and photographers who expect a very fast, tireless assistant are happy. It is a subscription

You are renting. Stop paying and you stop culling this way, and the habit you built around it has to be rebuilt. That is a fair trade for most working photographers, but it is a real commitment and it deserves to be named. Seasonal shooters should look at whether pausing is available before assuming twelve months of cost.

Who should buy it, and who should not

Buy Aftershoot Select if

• You shoot high volume, weddings or events, and the frame count is genuinely the problem.
• You work at a desktop machine anyway and have no wish to change that.
• You want a predictable bill that does not move when the season gets busy.
• You need or prefer local processing, for speed, for privacy, or because a contract says so.
• You are comfortable reviewing a proposed selection rather than making every call from scratch.

Look elsewhere if

• You shoot a handful of jobs a year. The time saved will not justify a year of subscription. Start with the free options in free photo culling software.
• Editing is your real bottleneck, not selection. A tool that only picks will not fix a 55 percent editing load. Look at Imagen or at outsourcing the edit.
