Aftershoot alternatives in 2026: six options, and when to just stay

Let's start where most "alternatives" articles won't: Aftershoot is good. It became the default AI culling tool for a reason, and for a lot of photographers reading this, the honest advice is to keep it. But "default" isn't the same as "right for you", and if you're here, something about the fit is off: the auto-pick philosophy, the desktop-only workflow, the pull toward a bigger bundle. Here are the six real alternatives, with published prices and the cases where each one genuinely wins. (Disclosure: option six is ours, it isn't shipped, and we say so plainly.)

When Aftershoot is still the right pick

Stay if the following describes you: high volume, happy to delegate the first pass, working at a desk anyway. Per Aftershoot's published pricing, Select is $10/mo billed annually, the cheapest tier in the category, tied with Narrative Lite, with unlimited image processing, local desktop processing (your RAWs never upload), a 30-day no-card trial, and the ability to pause your subscription 3 months a year. The Complete bundle (culling + editing + retouching, $45/mo annual) is arguably the best all-in-one value in the space. And "unlimited" is doing real work in that sentence: a typical wedding day produces 2,000 to 4,000 RAW frames, so a busy season runs to tens of thousands of images: on Aftershoot's flat plans, that number never touches your bill.

Switching tools has real costs beyond money: relearning, re-testing on your genres, workflow rewiring. If your only itch is a vague "maybe there's something better," the trials below will either confirm the itch or cure it, both outcomes are wins. Now, the reasons that do justify a look elsewhere: you want to make the picks yourself, you resent paying flat rates at low volume, you only need culling and keep getting upsold, or you wish culling didn't require sitting at a computer at all.

Start from your complaint, not from a feature list, each gripe points at a different door:

A different economic species: $0.05 per edited photo pay-as-you-go with a $7/month minimum, falling to about $0.04/photo at the 72K annual tier (tier breakdown; imagen-ai.com). Culling is included, but the product's heart is personalized AI editing, and it's cloud-based, uploads before culling. One caution: FilterPixel publishes accuracy comparisons against competitors, 94.7% vs 63.4%, that are its own self-published testing, not independent benchmarks, so verify on your own shoots. Lightroom, properly configured, the no-new-tool option

Cancelling AI culling entirely is a legitimate alternative if your volume is modest. Run your own numbers before you move

Two pieces of arithmetic settle most switching debates. First, the billing-cycle trap: Aftershoot Select is $120/yr billed annually but $180/yr paid month-to-month ($15 × 12): if you're on monthly billing and thinking of leaving over price, switching to annual saves a third without switching tools at all. The same spread exists at Narrative ($10 annual vs $15 monthly for Lite).

Second, the per-photo crossover. Imagen's pay-as-you-go rate of $0.05 per edited photo means a photographer delivering 12,000 images a year, say 20 weddings at 600 photos, comfortably inside the typical 400 to 800 delivered range, would pay about $600/yr, more than Aftershoot's entire $540/yr Complete bundle. Deliver 4,000 images a year instead, and Imagen costs about $200, cheaper than most flat plans. Per-photo pricing is a low-volume instrument; flat subscriptions reward scale. Map your last twelve months of deliveries before you believe anyone's "cheaper."
