Offline photo culling: the wifi off test every culling tool should pass

Turn the wifi off and run the cull. That is the whole test. If the tool slows down, stops, or asks you to sign in, then your photos were leaving the building and the speed you were sold belonged to someone else's servers. This article is about what offline culling actually means, why it is faster as well as more private, and where it matters most.

What offline means, and what it does not

Offline is a stronger word than local. A tool can keep your files on your disk and still need a network round trip for every decision, a licence check or a model download before it starts. Offline means the whole job, first frame to last sidecar, happens with the network cable unplugged, at the same speed.

Kepla is built that way on purpose. It reads every frame on your Mac using the Neural Engine and GPU. There is no upload, no queue and no account needed to try it. On a destination wedding with no signal it runs exactly as fast as it does on your desk, because nothing about the job ever depended on a connection.

Why the cloud is slow before it is anything else

A wedding is a 128 GB card, sometimes several. A cloud culler has to move all of it before it can look at a single frame, and the pages of those tools quote forty minutes to three hours for a shoot this size. Almost none of that is the model thinking. It is your upload speed, and then a queue behind every other photographer who finished a wedding the same Saturday.

A local culler starts at frame one the moment the card is in. On the reference wedding we use for every number on the site, Kepla looked at 4,812 frames in 4 minutes 22 seconds on a MacBook Pro M3 Max running on battery. The card copy to two drives took 24 minutes 10 seconds. Sorting was done 19 minutes 48 seconds before the copy finished. The drive was the only thing anyone waited for.

03 · THE PRIVACY LINE

A sentence you can say to a client

Photographers are asked, more and more, where the photos go. Contracts are starting to carry AI clauses, and a couple who has read one wants a plain answer. With an offline culler the answer is one sentence with no footnote: the files never left my computer.

That line is worth more than the speed. It means no terms of service to read about training data, no retention policy to check, and no email to write if a vendor is breached. Only your decisions ever sync, if you choose to sync them, and they weigh megabytes, not gigabytes.

Run the wifi off test on any tool

Copy a card you already culled. Switch the wifi off before you open the app. Run the cull and time it. Then switch the wifi on and run it again on a second copy. If the two times match and the tool never asked for a sign in, it is offline. If the first run failed or crawled, you now know where your photos go.

Is offline culling slower because my Mac is less powerful than a server?

No, because the server's power is spent after the upload, and the upload is the long pole. A MacBook Pro M3 Max on battery culled 4,812 frames in 4 minutes 22 seconds. The same shoot on a cloud culler is quoted at forty minutes to three hours, most of it upload and queue.

Do I need an account to cull offline with Kepla?

No. There is no account needed to try it, no sign in, and no licence check that needs a connection. The app opens, reads your card, and everything it works out stays on your Mac.

What syncs, if anything?

Only your decisions, and only if you want them on another device. They are XMP sidecars, a few kilobytes per frame. The photographs never leave the machine.
