
You have your picks. Now you have several hundred raw files that all need to look like they came from the same day. Batch editing is how that happens, and it works beautifully right up to the point where it does not. This is what to sync, how to sync it in Lightroom and Capture One, and the three situations where syncing quietly ruins a set.
The temptation after selection is obvious. You have a folder of picks, you edit the first frame until it looks right, you select everything, and you press Sync. Ten seconds later you have six hundred images that share one set of numbers, and maybe forty of them are correct.
Batch editing is not one step you do once. It is a series of small passes over groups of photos that genuinely belong together, and the skill is almost entirely in choosing the groups. Get the grouping right and syncing is close to free. Get it wrong and you spend longer undoing the sync than you would have spent editing by hand.
All of this assumes the selection is finished. It also assumes your picks landed in your editor with ratings and flags intact, which is less automatic than it sounds: the mechanics of getting selections into Lightroom are worth checking first.
Some adjustments describe your camera and lens rather than the scene in front of them. Those are the ones you can push across the whole shoot without thinking, and doing them first changes what every later slider looks like.
Start with the profile. In Lightroom Classic the profile sits at the top of the Basic panel: open the Profile pop-up menu and choose Browse to open the profile browser. Adobe Color is the default, and the camera matching profiles usually land closer to what you saw on the back of the camera. Pick one before you grade, because every slider underneath reacts to it.
Capture One does the same job in the Base Characteristics panel, which holds the ICC Profile and the Curve. Capture One describes these as the settings that "define the overall look for the camera or digital back," which is a useful way to hold it in your head. They are not an edit. They are the zero point the edit is measured from.
Then lens corrections, noise reduction and your baseline sharpening. These are properties of the file. Every frame from the same body and lens wants the same lens profile, and every frame at the same ISO wants roughly the same noise handling. This is the one pass where selecting all of your picks and syncing is genuinely right.
Both applications do the same five things under different names, and it is worth knowing all of them: the gap between them is the gap between a five minute pass and a forty minute one.

Two details are worth memorizing. Adobe's documentation says that holding Ctrl on Windows or Command on Mac "turns the Sync button into the Auto Sync button," and that Auto Sync then "adjusts other selected photos automatically after each slider is moved." That is a different way to work: instead of editing one frame and pushing it out, you edit the whole group at once. It is fast, and dangerous in exactly the ways described below.
In Capture One the equivalent habit is turning on Edit Selected Variants, which applies your adjustments to every selected variant rather than only the primary one. The copy and apply shortcuts are Shift plus Command plus C and V on macOS, Shift plus Ctrl plus C and V on Windows.
The most underused is the fourth row. The Copy Settings dialog in Lightroom and the Adjustments Clipboard in Capture One let you send white balance without sending the crop, or send color without sending exposure. Almost every batch editing disaster is caused by sending everything when you meant to send three things. The same logic drives good Lightroom keyboard shortcuts: the fastest photographers are not moving faster, they are doing less.
A wedding is not one lighting condition. It is eight or nine of them. Getting ready next to a north-facing window. A ceremony with hard backlight through a doorway. Family formals in open shade. Dinner under warm tungsten, then dancing under colored LED uplighting. Each of those is a batch. The gaps between them are where you stop syncing and start again.
The practical method takes about four minutes. Sort the set by capture time, scroll through at thumbnail size, and mark a boundary every time the light visibly changes. Color labels work well for this and cost you nothing. Now pick one anchor frame per group: the one with a face lit the way most of that group is lit, not the prettiest photo and not the first one. Edit the anchor properly. Sync outward from it, inside that group only.
Once a group shares a look, the two exposure matching tools are worth knowing. Adobe describes Match Total Exposures as a command that "allows you to easily make a series of photos with varying exposure values appear more consistently exposed." It sits under Settings in the Develop module and under Photo, then Develop Settings, in the Library module. Capture One's Normalize tool does a related job with an eyedropper that toggles between pick and apply: you sample a region in the frame you have already got right, then apply those values to the comparable region in another frame. It can handle exposure and white balance together or separately.
Both are good at cleaning up drift inside a group that already shares a light source. Neither can make two rooms into one room.
This is the section that matters. There are three situations where syncing does active harm, and all three are common.
A room lit by a window on one side and a tungsten lamp on the other contains two color temperatures in the same photograph. There is no single white balance that is right for it. There is only a compromise you choose per frame, based on where the faces are in that frame. Sync one white balance across a group like that and half the faces go warm while the other half go blue. This is the most common way a synced set falls apart, and it usually happens during getting ready, which is also the first thing you edit.
If you shot on auto white balance, the camera was re-deciding constantly. Two frames taken eight seconds apart can carry different as-shot temperatures for no reason you would notice at the time. Pushing the temperature number from one onto the other is not copying a look, it is overwriting a correct value with a wrong one. Before you sync white balance, check whether the group shares an as-shot value. Shooting a deliberate Kelvin value instead of auto is the cheapest fix available.
The same person, photographed in a bathroom with green walls, a ballroom with amber uplighting, and outside in open shade, needs three genuinely different corrections in order to look like one person. Skin is what clients notice, and a global sync cannot solve it because the required correction differs in each room. The working rule is: match the skin, not the settings. Get every group's skin to the same place by eye, and accept that the numbers underneath will be different in each group. A gallery where the temperature slider reads the same everywhere and the faces do not match is worse than one where the numbers are all over the place and the faces agree.
There is a fourth, smaller trap. Local adjustments do not travel well. Lightroom's subject and sky masks re-run on each photo, so they usually survive a sync. A brush stroke or linear gradient you placed by hand does not: it lands in the same coordinates on a frame where the subject has moved. Leave hand-placed masks out of the copy dialog.
Sync the group, then look at exactly three frames: the widest, the tightest, and the one closest to a window or a lamp. If all three still read as the same event, the group was real. If one has gone green or orange, the group was actually two groups, and splitting it now costs less than fixing it later.
Every step here exists because doing it out of order costs you time.
Two of those seven steps are hand work on individual frames. That is not the method failing, that is the method. A workflow with no hand work at the end produces a gallery clients describe as "a bit inconsistent" without being able to say why.

Be realistic about the size of the win. Batching does not reduce the number of images you look at. It reduces the number of images you make decisions about, and decisions are the expensive part.
For scale, a UK survey of more than 300 wedding photographers, reported by PetaPixel, found that shooting took 4 percent of working time, editing 55 percent and culling 11 percent. That survey ran in 2020, before AI selection tools were common, so treat the culling figure as a high-water mark. The editing figure has moved much less, which is why the difference between a clean batching pass and a messy one is measured in evenings rather than minutes. The other half of the equation happens upstream. Batching is only pleasant when the set you are batching is worth batching, which means the selection has to be good and it has to be finished. Anything that describes your camera or lens rather than the scene. That means the camera profile, lens corrections, noise reduction and your baseline sharpening. Those are properties of the file and they apply equally to every frame from the same body, lens and ISO. Everything else, including white balance, exposure and color, should only be synced within a group of photos that share the same light.
Only within a single lighting condition. White balance is a property of the light in the scene, so it travels safely from one frame to another shot minutes apart in the same room, and travels badly from a window-lit room to a tungsten reception. If you shot on auto white balance, check that the group shares an as-shot value first, because the camera may have been re-deciding between frames.
Sync pushes settings from the photo you are working on onto the rest of your selection when you press the button, and shows you a dialog so you can choose which settings travel. Auto Sync applies each slider move to all selected photos live as you make it. Adobe's documentation notes that holding Ctrl on Windows or Command on Mac turns the Sync button into the Auto Sync button.

Almost always because the group you synced across contained more than one lighting condition. The usual culprits are mixed light inside a single room, an auto white balance that shifted between frames, and the same faces photographed in rooms with different colored walls. Split the set into smaller groups by light source, edit one anchor frame in each, and sync only inside those boundaries.
